Ballad Health says it expects to remain in network with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee as the two organizations negotiate an updated provider agreement.

The Johnson City-based health system announced Wednesday, October 28, that discussions involve commercial, Exchange, TennCare and Medicare Advantage products, according to WJHL.

Why the negotiations matter

For patients in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, whether a healthcare system participates in an insurance network can affect appointment planning and out-of-pocket costs.

However, the announcement of negotiations does not itself mean that Ballad facilities have stopped accepting BlueCross coverage.

Network participation and any changes can depend on the exact health plan, employer arrangement and effective date.

What patients should do

Patients who have an appointment scheduled should verify their own plan's current network status with the insurer and care provider rather than assuming that every BlueCross product works the same way.

People facing an employer benefit-enrollment deadline should check official benefits guidance promptly, because coverage choices may be time-sensitive.

Keep copies of written notices, and ask whether any potential network change would affect upcoming care or referrals.

What comes next

The organizations are seeking a new agreement, but a completed contract and final terms were not established by the announcement.

Tri-Cities Daily will follow verified updates as negotiations continue.
