A Bristol father is preparing for an extraordinary challenge: running more than 2,800 miles across America.

Zachary Deel plans to depart Bristol on Saturday, October 17, with the Santa Monica Pier in California as his destination.

The father of four describes the journey as an effort to inspire his family, build community and begin a new chapter of his life.

A personal challenge becomes a public journey

Deel has spoken about difficult personal and financial circumstances and his decision to rebuild his physical fitness and sense of purpose.

After taking part in a 60-day fitness challenge, he says he placed among the top finishers in a large field of participants.

He hopes that attempting a demanding cross-country run will demonstrate perseverance to his children and other people facing setbacks.

More than 2,800 miles on the road

His plan calls for running from Bristol to Los Angeles while pushing supplies in an expedition cart.

He estimates the trip could take around 70 days, with a goal of reaching the California coast around Christmas Eve.

Those dates are goals rather than guarantees, since a journey of this length depends on physical condition, weather, roads and logistical support.

Deel's family is helping share his progress and hopes that followers will get to know the people and communities along his route.

Community support can take several forms

Deel has welcomed encouragement from people who want to follow updates, share his story or join him for a portion of the journey.

His organizers are also seeking practical assistance with food, water, equipment and other travel needs.

At its heart, the effort is a local family's story about facing challenges through a highly visible commitment.

Whether or not the timetable unfolds exactly as planned, the departure gives Bristol a distinctive community story to follow in the weeks ahead.
