A Southwest Virginia food assistance partnership helped children receive meals while school was out for the summer.

Feeding Southwest Virginia reports that its 2026 Summer Meals for Kids pilot delivered 289,026 free meals to 3,325 children between May and August.

The effort involved collaboration with Amazon and No Kid Hungry.

Participating families received shelf-stable meal boxes prepared for home delivery, with Amazon providing transportation at no charge to families.

The food bank said the project focused on eligible households in rural areas where access to food resources can present additional challenges.

Counties identified in the organization's announcement included Craig, Floyd, Montgomery, Dickenson, Wise, Lee, Russell and Wythe.

The figures describe meals delivered and children reached, rather than a count of 289,026 separate families.

That distinction matters when assessing the scale of the program and the practical value of direct delivery.

The effort highlights how coordinated food-bank partnerships can reach families across a large and sometimes difficult-to-serve region.
