The Mount Carmel Police Department has added an important piece of safety equipment for its K9 officer, Kilo.

The dog recently received a custom-fitted vest designed to provide protection against bullets and stabbing injuries while working alongside officers.

The vest also carries an inscription honoring Dolly Parton, linking a practical piece of police equipment to one of Tennessee's best-known cultural figures.

K9 Kilo joined the Mount Carmel department as its first canine officer earlier this month.

For a smaller community, a police canine represents an investment in specialized response capabilities as well as an additional partner for law-enforcement personnel.

Protective gear is one part of that commitment, intended to reduce the risks working animals face in unpredictable situations.

The new vest is a visible symbol of the department's effort to outfit its canine team for service.

Exactly what duties the dog performs should be understood through the department's own training and deployment information.

Residents who see Kilo at future community events may now notice both the protective equipment and its tribute to Dolly Parton.

The story offers a lighter community note while recognizing the serious work of keeping police animals safe.

It also reflects how local agencies and their canine partners can become familiar faces across Northeast Tennessee.
