River guides and tourism partners in Unicoi County received recognition this week for their part in bringing commercial rafting back to the Nolichucky River.

The special reception, called Raise Your Paddle: Back on the Noli, took place Wednesday, October 28, according to WJHL.

The Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development and members of the Unicoi County Chamber were involved in the event.

Recovery beyond the riverbank

Hurricane Helene caused major damage across the region, disrupting recreation businesses and communities that depend on visitors.

The restoration of commercial rafting operations is an important marker for local outfitters, guides and the broader tourism economy.

The recognition celebrates the people who helped make the return possible while acknowledging the region's difficult recovery.

Looking ahead

A restored commercial activity does not mean every trail, access point or nearby facility has returned to its pre-storm condition.

Anyone planning a rafting trip should consult a licensed outfitter for current schedules, river conditions and access details.

The Nolichucky's return to commercial rafting offers a hopeful example of persistence and cooperation in the Appalachian Highlands.
