Two local businesses are bringing fresh activity to downtown Elizabethton and Bristol, while a proposed national restaurant location in Johnson City continues through municipal approvals.

Phil's Dream Pit Opens in Downtown Elizabethton

Phil's Dream Pit opened its second brick-and-mortar barbecue restaurant on October 16 at 633 East Elk Avenue in downtown Elizabethton.

The business is known across the Kingsport and Gray area for smoked barbecue, including ribs and brisket.

Its newest location occupies the former Big Dan's East TN BBQ space near Elizabethton's Covered Bridge.

Co-owner and CEO Brian Pipkin has described the expansion as an opportunity to serve the community while preserving the atmosphere of the existing downtown building.

An official ribbon cutting was scheduled for October 28 through the Elizabethton Chamber and Main Street Elizabethton.

For residents, the opening adds another dining choice to the walkable downtown district.

Griffith Watch Company Establishes Downtown Bristol Storefront

Independent watchmaker Ralph Griffith has moved from building a business around his craft toward a physical retail presence in downtown Bristol.

The new Griffith Watch Company location is on State Street, where customers can explore the locally connected watchmaking venture.

The Bristol Chamber of Commerce listed an official ribbon cutting for Thursday, October 29.

Griffith's transition from teaching to watchmaking offers a distinctive local entrepreneur story alongside the region's more familiar restaurant openings.

Anyone planning a visit should confirm current shop hours and customer access directly with the business.

Watching Johnson City's Proposed Culver's Location

Johnson City's first proposed Culver's restaurant is progressing through city approval steps, but it has not opened.

City commissioners gave a first-reading approval on October 15 for a property conveyance involving approximately 1.88 acres near West State of Franklin Road and the former Optimist Park.

Additional city approvals are required before the property transaction is complete.

A representative said groundbreaking was targeted for November 30, but that date remains a plan rather than confirmation that construction has started.

We will continue monitoring the city process and report a confirmed groundbreaking or opening when appropriate.

Why These Updates Matter

Each development represents a different kind of local business change: an established regional restaurant expanding, an independent maker welcoming customers downtown, and a proposed chain restaurant moving through approvals.

Tri-Cities Daily will continue tracking openings, closings and changes across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, with a clear distinction between an announced plan and a completed opening.
