A historic Carter County landmark was lost Friday when lightning struck the Butchers Branch barn at Sycamore Springs, causing a fire that destroyed the structure.

Emergency officials said the barn was engulfed and fully involved when crews responded. No injuries were reported, and the nearby house was determined to be structurally safe.
