Good Thursday Morning, Tri-Cities!

As October draws to a close, this week's news brings big decisions, practical updates and plenty of ways to celebrate around the Appalachian Highlands.

We're tracking Ballad Health's ongoing BlueCross contract negotiations, Mountain City's rejection of a proposed data center rezoning, and potential changes involving an industrial operator in Erwin. You'll also find a $1 million infrastructure award for Lee County, new opportunities in education and community service, and encouraging news about Nolichucky River recovery.

Halloween weekend is especially lively: ETSU Homecoming brings football and festivities to Johnson City, while Kingsport and Greeneville have family celebrations. Our local events roundup will help you plan, and the Outdoors section looks at Virginia forest recovery and a few reasons to enjoy the autumn night sky.

For One Local Thing, we're exploring Kingsport's Exchange Place and its fascinating stagecoach-era story. Thanks for making Tri-Cities Daily part of your Thursday. Let's get into the week ahead!

Interesting Facts From Around the Tri-Cities

Johnson City started as a railroad stop: Before it grew into a regional center, the community was known as Johnson's Depot, a rail junction associated with founder Henry Johnson.

Kingsport was planned with purpose: City planner John Nolen helped shape the modern city in the early twentieth century, contributing to its distinctive layout of streets, neighborhoods and business districts.

Greeneville has a presidential connection: Andrew Johnson worked as a tailor in Greeneville before becoming the seventeenth president of the United States. His former tailor shop is preserved as part of a national historic site.
